Illustrated Man- Ray Bradbury and projection

I’ve been reading the Illustrated Man- Ray Bradbury  sci- fi book.   I used to really enjoy Ray Bradbury, John Wyndham and all this..

Farenheit 451 interesting politically but also now re- digital reading etc….and the ‘destruction’ of the book….

Unlike Philip K Dick which seems prophetic, this book seems very sparse and  focusses  on living Mars after the destruction of the world!- Not jolly but interesting bearing in mind the news this week about ‘water’ on Mars…

As I was reading the initial description about the illustrations moving  across the subject’s body I thought of the work  projecting moving images on to a body 4- way projection – Slides and video

When I did that I realised that the reason was that I wanted people and ’embodiment ‘ to be at the centre of my practice , if not the theory behind it –  moment of realisation 

Now I’m wondering if I should look again at this projecting onto flesh….the body as a screen…..



Praxis Software…. a workshop sometime ago!

Finally after a month of all sorts of things, some good and some not so good, I am back to catching up on this: Reminding myself what I have done and reflecting upon it.

The reflection will be interesting as it is so long since the event….. my recollections will be different from the way they were initially.

Especially as I have thought about them frequently over the past weeks despite not having the time or energy to commit to this Blog.

The plasticity of memory and how it changes with recollection and personal and social context has been looming large in my reading.

Maybe I’ll even be able to find some of the references to remind myself where I read about it and use it any writing…

Anyway, In April I went this workshop on Saturday 18 April:

Interactive Demonstration of Praxis LIVE  and Preview of the Workshop Outcome 

Praxis LIVE is a free, open-source software for making audio-visual performance tools, projections and interactive spaces. Join lead-developer Neil C Smith and Naomi Morris to create interactive projections and explore how Digital Prisoners use Praxis LIVE in their work. Laptop useful but not essential. 

It was very useful especially from the point of view of being able to create live overlay of observers incorporated into an installation or event.

Neil and Naomi often use it for dance events in and around Oxford but I could see how I may want to use it, possibly in the future with the video I am working on for the Reading Room…

The disadvantage is that my laptop is too old to run Java 7 or 8 which is necessary for Praxis.

I have just got a new Desktop with a big screen so I can see better  so I can’t afford to get a new laptop unless I really need to use this.

I will think about a reconditioned PC if necessary and a laptop would be hang for other projection stuff but won’t try it yet until I’m sure I need it..

It seems fairly simple to use.

Here are some pix of the event, some show how it can be used.

It can be used for overlay and so hypermediate an event.

Maybe I can do this similar in other ways…

Do I really want to do this and why?

Should I just crack on and do it anyway?

I guess I would do if I had the cash? time to try it along with a ll the other things I want to do…..

I need some clarity , which still isn’t present yet even though I am writing this nearly month after the event.

Hope fully writing the bog and the reflection will help me with this process..

Clare Carswell had her laptop with here and used it do show a drawing being erased and made at the same time.

We discussed what we could do within the limitations of iMovie and maybe Final cut and how this would be different i.e. in an interactive setting.

The question now is to rurally con side what I want to do at the Reading Room and what is actually most appropriate… so consider my main objective… Difficult as when I work with others it is easy to do what they would like or expect… as this is what is necessary in my community -based work…

It’s not about me!

Whereas my own work, of course , has to be different and I have to keep pushing that forwards for myself or they can both start to merge.

Participative does not necessarily mean that the artist does to have autonomy!

We had a good discussion about our practices and Joan Jonas.

She has a performance side to her practice too so that is good to find another middle-aged woman, locally who works in a similar way.

I have met her at other events, including the CDAN event the week before which I will write a post about… if I haven’t ….I can’t remember

Reflections on Mid-Point Review Presentation

After some delay, here are my reflections on the Mid-point review presentations.

Overall summary

  • Get the Voice over sound level and the video clip sound level right or no-one will pick up on the point of the pieces..
  • Put even less into the presentation in therms of images/clips but talk a bit more about context.
  • I didn’t reference any artists or any ‘affect’ quotes….I noticed that….
  • Maybe the emphasis seen IS the emphasis I really want to demonstrate.
  • Echoing Dave Charlesworth…use better kit to make the work so it is clearer….AND decide what it is I want to make clearer….!
  • Good link between wider work and practice is visible and this is good… just got to clarify to myself what I really want to say about it..
  • I can use the re-projection idea successfully for future work but must make it clearer.
  •  Think about how to incorporate the muslin body projection overlay? Is this something I can use or was it just part of a process to fins out What it is I am doing?? Has it served its purpose?
  • Cheer up! my voice is dreary and negative… I need to sound more confident…
  • The two audiences focussed on different things….. Why might this be?

Generally, I found it incredibly useful looking at everyone’s work and hearing  their critique, especially following on from some of the conversations we had during the Low Residency.

It was good to be with everyone again and I look forwards to next time. From the point of view of On-line learning it was also an intriguing and exciting exercise…. using Live Youtube Video feed, Google handouts and Skype all at the same time.

We were able to watch the presentations in the studio ( and so see our own work on the screen being viewed by the other students!), listen to the conversation, critique  and background noise from the studio and feed our comments to Jonathan, via Skype text chat. He then relayed them to the rest of the group verbally and if if the comments werefeom on-line students we could read them too.

The timing meant that we were given the link just before those in the studio. This worked wellI could watch the presentation and then listen fully to the comments made by from the  studio as well as comment and read the comments of others.

Of course, for my own presentation it was hard to do both at the same time but the beauty of the system is that their is a record of both conversations to use in this reflection! amazing really. All those BA crits. when I went home on the train and focussed o the one or two comments I remembered and had managed to write down.

We had a system where someone else use to ‘scribe’ for us but the chances were that , even the most dedicated used to actively engage in the discussion and not necessarily record the comments that we felt we most important. I find this interesting in itself from the point of view of :

  • the process of archiving and live ‘record’.
  • the ‘evidence’ of the process of the presentation
  • the perspective of ‘witnessing’ the same event form these different points of view and mediated/ remediated through different methods, software and media

It reminds me of a conversation I had with Charles from the course, in the pub after the Low Res. Week. He was describing the Charlie Hebdo incident and how he had seen the live-feed of the gunmen in the street after the attack in the office. He was painting , I think, in his studio at the time….

His point was… ‘Was he a witness?” He had seen the event unfold, live and seen it on the screen….

I remember my father talking, similarly, about his experience of watching the  SAS storming the Irainian  Embassy siege in 1980 live on BBC when he had turned on to watch the snooker… Anyway, I digress, it really did feel as if I was there.

I actually had some quite difficult issues to resolve at home at the time, whilst I was involved in the presentations. They were unfolding as I watched and contributed to the presentations. My experience of the studio and the Skype group  was ‘ as real’ as the events unfolding at home. I have left it some time to write this post for several reasons.

  1. I had to take a day out the day following to allow some ‘head space from all the intensity of the previous week and day, prior to the next few days. So I did some gardening.
  2. I have been busier with ‘other work’ as several small projects seem to be coming together and, as they are part of the context of my MA work, I need to allow space  as well as association, to keep things moving in the right direction.

I have just wanted to do loads of work following from the impetus generated by this Review but have had a lot of other ‘domestic’ and work stuff going on.

I can’t wait to find some space to ‘do stuff’! So, enough of the general, contextual reflection and on to the my thoughts about ‘my bit’!

I have some thoughts about the fact that there were no comments from anyone Studio and on-line on the earlier video-clips.

  1. I think that the poor audio ‘relationship’ between the voiceover and the audio soundtrack in the video means that it was not possible to read these and so there were no comments on them….
  2. Jonathan did say that it was not a review or assessment of our video making skills but actually if the video was poor, then the practice was unintelligible.
  3. I had difficulties showing enough of my work so that it was understood… but had to heavily edit the various video clips and so something is lost from a. having too many clips and images ( I think I did fall into this category…should have done much less to do more..) and b clips that were too short and so not readable either…
  4. If I made  a presentation again I would be more aware that when it was uploaded on to Vimeo that the sound level would default to that of the loudest ( obvious really!) and so if the voiceover is much louder than the soundtrack the soundtrack will be lost… even if it is not overlaid……I had realised this may be the case after uploading for the second time ( first time had glitch and some info lost) but it was late…I was tired…. etc etc… I really should have re- recorder the voiceover so that didn’t happen…

First up I though it interesting that the audio group focussed almost all on the Re-projection footage. No comments about any other bits of the work.

Trystan liked the convolution of the process of re-projection I like that terminology and will use it.

There was discussion about the ambiguity of the image and its lack of clarity.. nothing recognisable…and whether that mattered…it was more concept than anything visible.

Donald thought that using a better brighter projector and camera to pick the image up may work better…

I am unsure about this… I had wanted some ‘mystery’ and lack of clarity but possibly  it was too much… see later..

Jack thought the idea of the degradation of the image through mediation to the point of distortion was good and that if that could be captured effectively  in a final piece it would work well. He mentioned a piece where someone had re- Instagrammed an image 1000 times

 I’m glad he focused on the degradation and distortion as I think this is what I was getting at… In fact I had no direct objective in my methodology but to simply find out what questions I really wanted to ask… I still need to re assess AGAIN  for my Proposal

Ed Kelly mentioned the sound piece… see below in the Skype chat….where an artist recorded and re recorded their voice until all that were left were the acoustics of the room but not the original signal which was swamped.

I think he said that it could be done in the audio because of the reverb… but it maybe that he was talking about the ‘hangout audio’ not sure.

This sounds really interesting and useful and to find out the motives behind what he was doing… will give it a listen.

Someone mentioned a bizarre nostalgia ( Trystan ?)… Which I really like!!!!!

Charles liked the idea of body as interface….

and Jack commented that it was like a slider with a direct correlation between n’ then and now’ but I wasn’t sure what was… the video I think!.. Interesting.

Donald was confused as to whether the re-projected video was specific to the location as well as being filmed in the location...An interesting and justifiable  discrepancy.

I should have made clearer the Salt Way piece and maybe shown the original first to show its relevance and how that extends to the very ground that the projection is on.

I should have used the site specific terminology as I feel this is very very relevant to the work but didn’t as I think it is a sort of ‘corny’ term! I needed too though.

Jonathan asked the questions to whether the work did show links with my work with people with dementia and Jack said he thought it did. and Trystan? George…

They saw a definite reasoning  behind the process of making work somewhere and the the memory of location and action and the remembering of one but not the other.

This is brilliant and really key, as it means the work is readable even if the images  are ambiguous and lacking in clarity!!!!

So, most of my thoughts are actually reviewed at the top of this blog. I’ll post some more comments of other peoples when I’ve had a break and possibly post some more reflections before I start on the NEXT PHASE and update my PROPOSAL!

4- way projection – Slides and video

This work was made using 4 way projection from  two slide projectors ( Braun and Kodak Carousel) and an Epson and Pico projector.

The video projected was The Salt Way but with some delay between projections so not exactly simultaneous, and the slides were stills from a personal archive.

The images were projected on a body, which in some of the images has been covered with muslin to act as a surface for projection which is semi- transparent, allowing for the image to pass through on to the body beneath.

The body is situated at the intersection/ interface  of the 4 images.

The images and video shown have been selected for their role in making the process of experimentation visible.

There are another set of images which have been chosen for purely aesthetic reasons…..

The process was documented through photos and video using a small simple digital camera ( for taking snaps) and an iPod and Samsung phone.

Documentation was by myself and another observer/ witness.

I gave minimal direction regarding what to document.

Those people operating as a ‘ projection surface’ were asked to ‘use’ the muslin to view the images from their position ‘ inside’ the surface… they could from this position have an effect on the merging of the images to produce new ‘ mixed’ imagery.

I have thought a lot about what I was doing when I made this..

Dave CHarlesworth’d tutorial helped especially the bits where I felt  with what he said……

It was never intended to be about the images produced although they were surprisingly interesting and often beautiful… It was more about doing something , some action , to make something clearer to me.

I think that what it illustrates to me is that I put the human body , as people, at the centre  of the digital interaction..

Maybe that the affect I am interested in , in my work at least, will come from the presence of people… participants and witnesses, collaborators… that an essential part of the work is other human presence..  as participative audience.

This fits with my community practice too… and so the two are linked.

I will have to consider this more…. just in time for the Mid- Point Review  next week and then another re-writing of my Draft Proposal I guess.

Latest Salt Way

This time I managed to project and re-film the whole of The Salt Way (2008) but instead of with louise , who worked with me on the original and other recent clips, this was with Helen.

Hopefully she can add some useful comments to the process which was, as usual, amusing as well as physically uncomfortable.

She was familiar with the original work which I have chosen not to show here at the moment.

The layering of images and sound is getting interesting and at last I am excited by this work having been bored by a lot of what I have been doing before..

It’s quite cool if you play them both at the same time…or almost !!!

Well I like it…will reflect and analyse why I guess.

The sound is interesting which is useful as in a little while we have a session with Ed Kelly on this very area!!

More thoughts on Projection

I’ve been trying to sort out what I am doing now with the projection stuff and why….?

And how it fits into my proposal ..if indeed it does.

The latest things I’ve messed with have been projecting old video of the making of ‘The Salt Way’,( a piece I made in 2008 on a nearby bridle way) , on to the bridleway… well that was the intention but for various reasons it didn’t happen and I projected it instead on to some grass in the back garden of a friend’s house near the bridle way.

And the friend was the person who helped me make the original work so I guess there is some connection….

Anyway then I couldn’t upload from her iPod ( wrong cable!) so I refilmed the vid on my phone and uploaded.

So here are the two.

It becomes a bit like  a video feedback sort of a thing….

Really not at all sure what I am doing but

  • the projection is more important than the image
  • The image quality at this stage is not really that relevant
  • The content of the image is mainly relevant in context to location…..I think
  • I like the idea of projecting outside but minimally onto maybe the track surface so that may be next and onto trees

I am limited to some extent by the capabilities of this little Pic projector but at least it frees me from a power supply .

Actually looking at both of them running together is quite interesting…

I must investigate further…

Final thought before my tutorial have been of Fluxus, which I often return to .

I’ll discuss my experiences of Snapchat as a medium of distribution and of writing this blog and my feedback later.

Along with introducing Google Maps (as a starting point for Reminiscence to an art group at a care home I work at.

And Shadow Puppets at  the Digiarts group at OYAP, a young peoples art trust, in Bicester!
